In 1885, the Wagner family emigrated from Alsace. In 1941, Charlie Wagner and
Lorna Belle Glos Wagner bought 73 acres in Rutherford. In the 1960’s, they
replaced the fruit orchards with Pinot Noir, Johannesburg Riesling and 60 acres
of Cabernet Sauvignon which forms the foundation of today’s Caymus Cabernets. In
1972, the Wagners and their son, Chuck, established Caymus Vineyards and
produced their first wines. “Special Selection” was introduced in 1975. Chuck
became the winemaker in 1984 and continues to direct all viticultural and
winemaking operations focusing entirely on Cabernet Sauvignon and “Special
Selection”. "A barrel sample of the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection
offers terrific fruit intensity and purity, a more laid-back style, a meaty,
chewy texture, and impressive opulence as well as length. It should evolve for
10-15 years." 92-94 Robert Parker |
