Plantagenet is located in Great Southern, a cool climate area within Australia. It all started in 1968 with Tony Smith planting 1 hectare of experimental vines (half Shiraz, half Cabernet Sauvignon) - the first in the area. The winery (initially a shed) was established in 1975. There are now 5 vineyards with about 128 hectares under vine. The winery was sold in 2000 to Lionel Samson & Son, a large family run business. There are 3 labels produced by Plantagenet. The Omrah brand is named after the SS Omrah, an ocean liner that transported settlers to Southern Australia for 18 years. The fruit is sourced from both estate vineyards and nearby growers. ""Medium ruby-colored, it offers a fragrant nose of strawberry and rhubarb. Supple-textured, the wine delivers full-flavored ripe, sweet fruit, integrated tannins, and a medium-long finish. Drink it over the next several years."" Wine Advocate rated 89. |
