Hermann and Agnes Seifried founded this winery in 1973 and established a 2 hectare vineyard in the Moutere Valley that was planted with 14 varietals. With the addition of vineyards in Redwood Valley in 1979 and Rabbit Island/Appleby in 1988, vineyard holdings increased to roughly 200 hectares. Today, 7 main varietals are grown. Grapes for this wine come from the Cornfield vineyard in the Rabbit Island area. In the early 1800’s, sweet potatoes were grown in this wide river flat with gravelly sandy loam. Scrub was burned to increase soil fertility, but the farming methods used keep yields low and flavors concentrated.
