Cambria Estate, established in 1987, is about 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean in the Santa Maria Bench. The vineyards were purchased by the Jackson family in 1987, but are part of the Tepusquet Vineyard that was planted between 1970 and 1971 and supplied grapes to many major wineries. The vineyards are planted to Chardonnay (1,130 acres), Pinot Noir (235 acres), Syrah (19 acres) and some experimental varietals. This wine comes from Katherine’s vineyard (named after the owner’s daughter) which is leaf thinned (for even ripening), has low-nutrient soil (which stresses the vines and concentrates flavor), is green harvested, then handpicked. The maritime influence permits longer hang time which produces very ripe, intensely flavored fruit. The grapes are whole cluster pressed and barrel aged for 6 ˝ months sur lies. “The 2006 vintage is bright with citrus, apple, peach, and vanilla aromas. Rich, mouth-filling flavors of grapefruit, citrus blossom, white peach, and sweet oak lead to a crisp finish with a lasting impression of spicy oak."" Winery notes.
