About fifty miles from the city of Mendoza, at the foothills of the Andes Mountains is the small family winery and vineyards of Gouguenheim in Valle Escondido. This Winery is now producing some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Chardonnay and Merlot in Argentina. Gouguenheim’s vineyards benefit from a very unique terroir. The vineyards are located about 2,000 feet in the Andes foothills. The region has a desert climate with about 320 days of sunshine per year. Water for the vineyards comes from runoff from the Andes Mountains and is irrigated into the sandy soil. The temperature differences between day and night in the growing season are on average 35 degrees. Because Winter arrives late in that part of Argentina, the winemakers at Gouguenheim are able to wait until all of the fruit is ripe before hand picking. |
