At the end of the nineteenth century, the vineyard "La Maqueline"
was part of a great estates owned by Mr Nathaniel Johnston. That domain
encompassed great wine estate, as Château Dauzac, ranked "5 th grand
cru classé Margaux", and bordered La Maqueline's estate, next to the
actual Château de Cazenove. Château Dauzac, as a groundbreaking estate,
created first the sparkling wine and discovered the Bordeaux gruel to
fight against brown rot.
In 1989, Mme Wilhelmina de
Cazenove van Essen and her children decided to restore the old
vineyard. This is how the Château de Cazenove came into existence. We
selected the perfect parcels of "palus secs", then planted them with
the adequate grape-varieties : Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, that
yield excellent results in this fertile soil. We farm the vineyard with
attentive care, as green-harvesting, thinning out the leaves, for a
better quality of grapes. Each parcel and grape-variety is vinifyed
separately in stainless still tanks. We proceed to a rather long
fermentation on the skins, under controlled temperature to extract the
vintage's character. Later on the wine is aged in oak casks and yields
harmonious finesse and complexity. Also a precise oenologyc control in
strict respect of tradition enabled the Château de Cazenove to recover
the past glory.
