BACKGROUND The Rock Solid Red is a unique, multi-variety red wine blend produced by the Talley family. Though the exact blend varies from year to year, cabernet sauvignon and syrah are often the predominant varieties. As with all wines produced under the Bishop’s Peak label, the goal is to make a handcrafted wine that reflects the distinctive characteristics of San Luis Obispo County vineyards. VINEYARDS The 2005 Bishop’s Peak Rock Solid Red is a blend of 46% cabernet sauvignon, 28% syrah, 23% cabernet franc, and 3% petite sirah. All but the petite sirah were sourced from the Talley family’s newest vineyard holding, Hazel’s Vineyard. Located in the El Pomar region of Templeton, the vineyard is named for Hazel Talley, who founded Talley Farms with her husband Oliver in 1948. The petite sirah, from Wolff Vineyards in the Edna Valley, adds depth and richness to the blend. WINEMAKING Grapes from both of the vineyards were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness between September 30 and October 16, 2005. All lots were fermented separately using native yeasts and aged in a combination of French and American Oak barrels. After 18 months, the cuvée was blended and bottled in April, 2007. Just over 4,994 cases were produced. TASTING NOTES Deep maroon in color and medium in body, this refined blend gives aromas of red cherry, anise, juniper berry and vanillin. Cassis, darker fruits and hints of black pepper join these flavors on the palate. The light tannic structure ensures that this wine will pair well with many of your favorite dishes, from pasta with red sauce to tri-tip grilled “Santa Maria Style”. |
